How to read a line striper tip number

Striping tips use a three-digit code, but it is read a little differently from a general-purpose spray tip:

  • The last two digits are the orifice size in thousandths of an inch. A 419 has a .019" orifice.
  • The first digit sets the line-width band. Striping tips are held close to the surface, so they are rated by the width of the line they lay down rather than by fan width at 12". The bands are listed in the chart below.

Choose the line width your job specifies first — that is usually fixed by the layout or the local standard — then pick the orifice that suits the paint and the speed you want to walk or drive.

Choosing an orifice for marking paints

Orifice controls how much paint reaches the surface, which on a striping job decides both the mil thickness you lay down and how fast you can move. Too small and you will walk slowly to build a legal line; too large and you will waste paint and get overspray at the line edge.

OrificeTypical use
.013"–.017"Thin waterborne marking paints and stencil work, where a crisp narrow edge matters more than build.
.017"–.023"The general parking-lot range — standard waterborne and latex traffic paints at normal walking speed.
.023"–.029"Heavier traffic paints and higher-build lines; roadway work and ride-on striping.
.029"–.035"High-build and heavy-bodied marking materials, and the widest lines where flow has to keep up with speed.

Traffic paints are abrasive and hard on tips. Check the paint manufacturer's recommended orifice range and required wet mil thickness before committing to a size for a spec job.

Which Bedford tip range do I need?

Striping tips fit the same standard-barrel guards as general-purpose tips, but they are built to lay a defined line rather than a spray fan. Use this to place your job:

Getting longer life from a striping tip

  • Traffic paint wears tips fast. Marking materials are far more abrasive than architectural paint, so expect a shorter service life and keep a spare of your working size on the machine.
  • Watch the line edge, not the calendar. A worn striping tip lays a line that is narrower in the middle and ragged at the edges, and it will start failing a width spec before it fails outright.
  • Run the lowest pressure that gives a clean edge. Extra pressure erodes the orifice and throws overspray past the line, which costs paint and cleanup.
  • Flush thoroughly at the end of the day. Dried marking paint in the orifice is the most common cause of a distorted line on the next job.

Line Striper Tip FAQ

How is a striping tip different from a regular spray tip?

A striping tip is built to lay a defined line on pavement rather than a wide fan on a wall. It is used close to the surface and is rated by the width of the line it produces. The guard it fits is the same standard-barrel type used by general-purpose tips.

What size tip do I need for a standard parking-lot line?

A typical parking-stall line is 4" wide, which puts you in the 300 series. A 319 or 321 is a common starting point for waterborne traffic paint; move the last two digits up if you want more build or want to walk faster.

Will these fit my Graco LineLazer?

These tips fit standard-barrel RAC 5 and Titan SC-6 style guards, which is what most airless striping machines use. Each product page lists the equipment it is compatible with — check that list against your machine before ordering.

How long should a striping tip last?

Far less time than an architectural tip, because marking paints are abrasive. Judge it by the line: when the edges go ragged or the line runs narrow of spec, the orifice has worn and the tip is costing you paint.

Are these genuine Graco tips?

No — Bedford tips are compatible replacements, not genuine OEM parts. Each is manufactured to OEM-equivalent dimensions so it fits the same guards and lays the same rated line and orifice as the tip it replaces, at a lower cost per tip.

Compatibility and cross-reference

Bedford line striper tips are compatible replacements cross-referenced to Graco's LL5 series and Titan's 697 series striping tips. Search the OEM part number from your equipment manual — dashes optional — or open the Custom Lookup Tool to match tips to your machine.
